How do we handle mistakes?

Hauptreport corrects material errors promptly and transparently. When we get something wrong, we update the article and add a clear correction note explaining what changed and why. Our standards desk, led by Melanie Winter (emma.sandberg@hauptreport.de), reviews every reported error and determines the appropriate fix within one business day.

Accuracy is the foundation of trustworthy journalism. Readers rely on us to get the facts right, and when we fall short, we own it openly. A correction note appears at the top or bottom of the affected article, stating the original error, the corrected information, and the date of the change. For errors that affect the core meaning of a story, we may also publish a separate correction notice on the article page and, where warranted, issue a broader clarification.

What qualifies as a correction?

We correct any factual mistake that materially alters the accuracy or fairness of an article. This includes errors in names, dates, figures, quotations, legal details, statistical data, and historical context. Ambiguities, missing context, or misleading phrasing that could cause misunderstanding are handled as clarifications rather than corrections, though both are processed with the same seriousness.

Minor spelling or typographical errors that do not affect meaning are fixed silently. Any change that could influence a reader’s understanding of the story is accompanied by a correction note. Our Fact-Checking Policy explains how we verify information before publication, and our Editorial Policy sets the broader standards that guide every piece we publish.

What you can expect from us

When you report a potential error, we acknowledge receipt within 24 hours and begin an immediate review. Our fact-checking team under Melanie Winter examines the claim against original sources, interview recordings, official documents, or other verified material. If the error is confirmed, we update the article and add a correction note the same day whenever possible, and no later than one business day after confirmation.

We do not remove articles simply because they contain an error; we correct them transparently. Each correction note remains permanently attached to the article so that readers can see the full record. For significant errors that misrepresent a person, organisation, or event, we also notify the affected party directly and offer a right of reply if warranted. This process is overseen by our Complaints Procedure, which provides a formal route for readers who are not satisfied with the outcome.

How can you report an error?

Send details of the error to corrections@hauptreport.de. Please include the article headline, the URL or publication date, the specific passage you believe is incorrect, and what you understand the correct information to be. Supporting evidence such as links, documents, or screenshots helps us resolve the issue faster.

You may also use our general contact address info@hauptreport.de, but the corrections desk receives the fastest response. We treat every report seriously, regardless of whether it comes from a subscriber, a source, a competitor, or a casual reader. If you are unsure whether something qualifies as an error, send it to us anyway — we would rather review a borderline case than miss a mistake.

Who oversees the corrections process?

Melanie Winter, Ansvarig för faktagranskning (emma.sandberg@hauptreport.de, +46 8 525 030 66), leads the fact-checking and corrections desk at Hauptreport. She is responsible for source verification, correction decisions, and ensuring that every fix meets our editorial standards. If a dispute arises over whether an error occurred or what form the correction should take, the matter escalates to Chefredaktör Michael Schulte (anders.lindqvist@hauptreport.de, +46 8 525 030 61), who makes the final decision.

Michael Schulte, as editor-in-chief, holds ultimate responsibility for every correction published on the site. Readers who are unsatisfied with a correction decision may escalate their concern to him directly. Our Ownership & Funding page and Contact page provide further details about the people behind Hauptreport and how to reach us.
